User joDeNo on Aqua-Soft Forums explains the practical difference between ICNS and Macintosh Icons (also known as Resources or RSRCs).
As you might notice, for some reason when you want to change default icon on a Mac, using paste into Info window method, ICNS files doesn't always work. What you need are RSRC files. So you need Icns2Rsrc to convert your ICNS files to RSRC files.
